Terracina to Benevento

14. Montesarchio to Benevento

This is a beautiful day of walking.

For those who stayed in San Martino Valle Caudina, there are two options: 1. Walk into Montesarchio on the SP 138 and rejoin the path there. 2. Walk east through the town of Iardino, then north to join the SS7 at Tufara Valle, and continuing along the SS7 until rejoining the SS7 closer to Benevento.

Benevento occupies the ancient Samnite site of Maleventum. In 274 BC the Romans conquered it and changed its name (which they thought meant Bad Events) to Beneventum. Its main sites include the ancient theatre (coloseo), the Church of Santa Sophia with its octagonal interior and its tower, the Cathedral, the Church of Madonna Della Grazie, and the Arch of Trajan At this Arch the Via Traian breaks from the older Via Appia's more southern route.
