Terracina to Benevento

13. Maddaloni to Montesarchio

This is a long day, mostly urban---the towns are strung together like pearls, one after another. Along the way, the Via Appia passes through the Caudine Forks where in 321 BCE the Samnites trapped the Romans and stopped their advance.

The tracks are easy to follow, running along streets in the towns until reaching Montesarchio. Mount Taburno and its Tower of Montesarchio and castle dominate the city of Montesarchio (ancient Caudium) and its plain and can be seen along this portion of the VA

An alternative, which unfortunately misses the tower of Montesarchio, is to stay in San Martino Valle Caudina. Yet another option is to look for a place somewhere short of Montesarchio, because the stage from Montesarchio to Benevento is short.
