Terracina to Benevento

09. Formia to Sessa Aurunca

From Formia, the path leads out of town on the Via Appia Nuova. With a little creativity a pilgrim can find a gentler and quieter way out of town that is closer to the sea and involves less traffic.

If the pilgrim has spent the night in Itri before visiting Formia, Minturno would be the natural stop. No place could be more hospitable. The helpful Pro Logo (tourist information center) is immediately obvious walking into town on the Via Appia. The food and room at La Rosetta Hotel, Via Lungomare 104 were excellent. The city also has an excellent beach and waterfront to walk. The Cathedral of St. Peter holds two greats works of art, the Rambo and paschal candelabrum, both with intricate geometrical mosaics.

Not far beyond Minturno is the Roman theatre, well worth a visit. It was built in the early years of the Roman Empire and could hold 4,500 spectators.

Next, the Garigliano River marks the border between the regions of Lazio and Campania. Site of battles between Arabs and the Papal coalition in 915, between the Spanish and French in 1503, and the Germans and Allies in 1943.

After crossing the river on the Via Appia Nuova, the path heads to the right on the Via Domitiana.

Sessa Aurunca’s Romanesque cathedral was begun in 1103.  It is most appreciated for the mosaic floors and ritual appointments that are decorated with beautiful mosaics revealing the influence of Islam and Constantinople.
