Rome to Terracina

05. Sezze to Abbazia di Fossanova

Category: Rome to Terracina

The way out of Sezze is on the Via Colli, then follow roads and paths until the Via Torretta Rocchigiana, which climbs gently into the town of Priverno.

Although Priverno’s history extends back before the Roman conquest, it disappeared with the collapse of the empire, probably at the hands of the Saracens.  It is best known for the nearby Fossanova Abbey.

From Priverno the tracks follow the Amaseno Canal to the abbey.

The Abbey of Fossanova, begun around 1130, is one Italy’s most celebrated examples of Burgundian Early Gothic architecture.  The simple walls, rose window, chapter house, gardens and cloister are beautifully preserved.  Of historical note, St. Thomas Aquinas died in the abbey on his way to the Second Council of Lyon in 1274.

There are currently accomodations in Priverno and bed and breakfasts near the Abbazia. From the B and B Domus Victoria in Priverno (Boschetto actually) there is a back way to walk to the Abbazia.  From Domus Victoria: After walking back to the main road (Via Boschetto) turn left and walk straight down the road (the name changes to Via Santo Spirito) and continue until the road intersects with Via San Martino. At this intersection, turn left and walk briefly in front of the fence of the large house. At the end of the fence, there is a small path turning right into the woods. Follow this path through the woods and down to the intersection with SP62A. The Abbazia is just to the left on this road.
