Today begins a new stage in the walk across Italy. The arch of Trajan marks the beginning of the Via Traiana, which we will follow until at least Troia. Construction on the Trajan Way began in 109 AD. This route from Benevento to Brindisi cut a day's walk off the old Via Appia.
After the arch of Trajan, the path leads on streets and a muddy dirt track into the industrial section of Benevento. While trail markings lead over an old Roman bridge, a detour is possible over a much newer bridge, one without weeds and warning signs. The walk improves as the road leads into the country and makes its way into the Appenines, the mountain spine of southern Italy.
