Bari to Durres to Thessaloniki

37.Mirake to Dardhe

From the Hotel Balkane we walked back up the highway to the bridge. After recrossing the bridge, we walked up the road, and then took the left fork, following the road up the hill. This was an easy climb and a beautiful walk up a high hill. Near the top are some great stretches of well preserved road. As it traverses the hill (is traverses the right word here--check this?), there are several places where the path becomes very narrow (see pictures). Rather than the book's description of 150 meters of "very narrow", its more like several very narrow spots spread out over 400 meters or so. The loose rock is slippery--I wouldn't want to do this section in the rain or mud. We followed the path on, with beautiful views. As the book says, the soil changes to red, then we walked into Upper Babje, where we had coffee and lunch at one of the two coffee shops/bars across from each other. From there we followed the book and the tracks to the short cut path to Dardhe. We found this to be quite workable (a bit steep) and we followed it down the hill into Dardhe where we were welcomed at the bar, and into the school. We slept on the floor of the school over night, and ate at the bar behind the school. The woman at the bar cooked us a feast--several kinds of salad, and chicken with lemons. The school was a great place to stay although the bathroom was very smelly and with eastern style toilets (slits in the floor).
