Bari to Durres to Thessaloniki

35. Broshke to Elbasan

Created by: Shawn Norris

The road from Broshke runs parallel to and above the river, along narrow paths through a rural neighborhood. We ran into various barn animals along the way, before heading up a hill and over the saddle where we could look out over the oil refinery (#10 on the guidebook map). Then there's a steep drop down the hill, and next to the old oil refinery, before joining the flat path, heading across a relatively swampy area. Along here a strong wind and rain started up and we took shelter for awhile in a place that sold or stored fertilizer. The path continues across a flat, relatively wet area, at one point crossing a relatively fast stream on a old broken part of bridge. We walked straight along through what the book describes as a dutch "polder". Then the path hugs the river, and we came into the outskirts of Elbasan, along the river, before finally crossing on a bridge with very rough guardrails, and walking up into the historic center of town and our hotel, the Hotel Skampa.
